World War II Posters, ca. 1942-1944

(From: State Defense Council, Posters, ca. 1942-1944, Series S1205)

These World War II posters portray a variety of war-time themes including conservation and rationing, espionage and counterespionage, war bonds, war production, health, and the allies. The posters were produced primarily by the United States government and distributed in Florida by the State Defense Council, established to direct efforts toward total war preparedness for the state. Created by Governor Frederick P. Cone in November 1940, the Council was authorized by law in 1941 (Ch. 20213, Laws of Florida). The Council directed local, county, and regional defense councils and was comprised of twelve divisions: Industry and Material Resources, Labor and Personnel, Civil Protection, Fire Protection and Water Supply, Agriculture, Food, Health and Housing, Communications and Transportation, Power and Fuel, Finance and Budget, Home Community Service, and Information, Education and Moral. The Council was terminated by Executive Order in 1945 with the ending of the war.
