Seminole People of Florida: Survival and Success

The Museum of Florida History will host the exhibit Seminole People of Florida: Survival and Success from November 15, 2007, to June 1, 2008. Online resources from the State Archives of Florida and the Museum include lesson plans, photographs, Seminole portraits, and audio clips.

Photographic Collection

Images of Florida Seminoles in the Sunshine State - These images give only a brief insight into the vibrant culture and complex history of the Seminole Peoples of Florida.

Bedell Collection - 126 prints of Deaconess Harriet Bedell working among the Seminole Indians in South Florida from 1933 to 1960

Peithmann Collection - 1,074 images of Florida Seminole Indians, 1950s

Small Collection - Of particular significance are his photographs of Indian mounds and various views of hammocks before early development destroyed them (1902-1938).

 

Online Classroom

Seminole Portraits - Color portraits of Seminoles leaders and chiefs. Includes lesson plans.

Seminole Doll Making - Seminole doll maker Mary B. Billie and her daughter, Claudia C. John, discuss the history and practices of Seminole doll making. Includes photos and lesson plans.

Seminole People of Florida: Survival and Success - A new exhibit detailing the history of the Seminole people in Florida from the 1850s to the present. More than 150 artifacts, a recreated trading post, and a traditional Seminole dwelling called a chickee will help tell the story of a culture that has surrived and become very successful.
