About "Writing Around Florida"

"Writing Around Florida" uses selected photographs from the Florida Photographic Collection as writing prompts. The writer is guided through the step-by-step process of writing and saving their response. The author can:

  • Select a photograph
  • Select options
  • Write a response to the photograph
  • Save the writing together with the photograph to the author's own computer

Step One - Select a Photograph

Select a photograph
Each week, a new selection of photographs from the Florida Photographic Collection will be available.

The Florida Photographic Collection is a nationally recognized component of the State Archives of Florida. The collection spans a wide range of visual images, from copies of mid-15th century maps to current photographs. Together, they form the most complete portrait of Florida available--one that draws its strength from family pictures, the homes of Floridians, their work, and their pastimes.

Step Two - Select Options

Enter the writer's name
After selecting a photograph, the writer may enter their name or pen name in the space provided. The name will appear under the title of the finished work. This step is optional.

Select a writing prompt
There are many ways of looking at a photograph and using that image to inspire writing. The photograph may spark a memory in the writer's own life. The writer may choose to observe the photograph and gather clues about a time or place. Or the writer may imagine interacting with the people or scene in the photograph.

A drop-down menu allows the writer to select a writing prompt. This step is optional.

Select a word count goal
A drop-down menu allows the writer to select a word count goal.
The author may choose to write without stopping, editing, or correcting spelling until the goal is reached. Because the text can be saved to the computer, the writer may choose to go back later and make revisions as desired.

Step Three - Write

A space is provided online for writing. It is not necessary to reach the word goal in order to continue to the next step.

Clicking on the "Draft Essay" button will convert the photograph and writing into a format that can be saved to the author's own computer. This step may take a few seconds.

Step Four - Save Writing
At this stage the work is ready to be saved to the author's computer. Click "Download Essay." A dialog box will pop up, prompting the user to save or open the file. Follow the directions to save the file or open it in a word processing program such as Microsoft Word.
