Key West - the Dale M. McDonald Exhibit

This exhibit contains selected images from over 5,000 slides and photographs in the Dale M. McDonald Collection which document art exhibits, businesses, boating events, attractions, community events, landscapes, residences, and street scenes in Key West.

Firefighter and photographer Dale McDonald was born in Key West, Florida on October 2, 1949.

Mr. Rex Shaw was one of the last of the original cigar makers in Key West. Dale McDonald's grandfather, George, worked as a cigar maker along with Rex in many of the cigar factories in Key West, FL.

This ship was used as a reference point in searching wreck sites. Once, while as the 'Sentry' vessel over the Atocha wreck, it was accidently strafed and bombed by a reserve Navy squadron out of Tennessee. Remarkable, they didn't hit the ship or it's startled occupant." Read more.

Shows the theater after being renovated following many years of remaining vacant. The theater re-opened as an entertainment night club in lieu of a movie theater, which it was originally. Note the opening act for the theater, 'Doc' Severinsen, the former band director for Johnny Carson, the late night TV entertainer.

Migrant Workers During the Great Depression in Florida These images were created by the Farm Security Administration in order to document the hardships of farm workers during the Great Depression.   Baseball in Florida From Joe DiMaggio to the All American Girls Baseball League, this exhibit features historic baseball images from the 19th and 20th centuries.   Spanish-American War The port city of Tampa served as the primary staging area for U.S. troops bound for the war in Cuba.
