This film has footage of the 1978 Florida Folk Arts Conference held at the Stephen Foster Memorial in White Springs, Florida. Folklorist Alan Jabour, director of the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, defines folk art and folk life for an off-camera interviewer. Folklorists Peggy Bulger and Ralph Rinzler and Florida Folk Festival director Thelma Boltin are also shown. The film contains additional footage of a square dance and musical performances. Norteño, sometimes also called Norteña or Conjunto, literally translates to the word “northern,” referring to the region of northern Mexico and present day southern Texas where the musical style originated.
