Noted herpetologist Ross Allen founded and directed the Ross Allen Reptile Institute at Silver Springs from 1929 to 1975. He died in Gainesville, Florida, in 1981.

Ross Allen was my uncle’s scout leader, and we always visited him when my uncle came to town. The snakes were scary when I was little, but Mr. Allen was always very patient and I remember petting snakes at Silver Springs. None that big though!
