General Note
Accompanying note: "Jean Waldron first began making her palm fiber fans as a young woman. She learned from a book and has been making variations on her first design ever since. This fan is her favorite style and was made two years ago at age 90. Ms. Waldron gathers the center shoot of the sable palm during the 'full of the moon.' She then strips the shoot and lets the fibers cure. After curing, she makes her fancy braid and sews it to a palmetto frond, incorporating the stem as the handle to the fan. In her earlier years she hand-sewed the braid to the palmetto, but now uses a sewing machine due to failing eyesight. Ms. Waldron also works with other palm fibers which are native to Florida."
