Physical Description
General Note
In the far distance is Bartow's first brick block. It was completed in June, 1888. Replaced a block of wooden store buildings destroyed by fire two years before. Some of the buildings first occupants included were Lang Brothers, Motley and LeMoyne, and Reed and Brothers.
First building on right was constructed in 1882 as the Saint Mark Hotel. It was owned by P.D. Wright of Rome, Georgia. Leased to George M. Gates. It could accomadate 75 people, and was by far Bartow's largest hotel when it was built. It later became (as shown here) the Tremont House, and a few years later became known as the Vienna Bakery, where Mrs. Taggert dispensed not only baked goods but other food products.
Next to the livery stable, with the high false front, is the Gold Hotel. The second opera house was located on the second floor.
Looking west from Wilson Street shortly before the electric light plant was completed in 1897.
Beyond the hotel at right is "Our Drug Store", Disston Land Company, Oppenheimer Drug Store and, at far right the court house square.
First at left : livery stable with horses and men in front.
