General Note
Born on January 28, 1939, in Coffee Creek, Montana. After high school he joined the U.S. Marines, serving from 1957-1961. Moved to Dade County in 1965 and while attending Miami-Dade Community College he met and married Linda Dorrell on November 18, 1967. He entered the police academy in 1971. Officer Mertes was shot and killed by a fleeing car theft suspect (Lonnie James Walker) on November 5, 1980. The name of Carl Mertes is inscribed on the National Law Enforcement Memorial (West Wall, Panel 19, Line 1) in Washington, D.C.
