Appleton became a major of Company A of the 54th Massachusetts Colored Volunteers. During the Battle of Olustee (Florida), he stayed behind at Barber's Plantation to protect the rear guard, but still heard the battle some 16 miles away. Appleton's war journal is in the West Virginia State Archives.
