Robert Knickmeyer was born in Hanover, Germany on January 3, 1838 but by 1861 was living in Apalachicola, Florida. Knickmeyer enlisted at Apalachicola as a sergeant in Company B of the 4th Florida Infantry Regiment. In 1862 he became First Lieutenant. He fought in the Kentucky campaign, Vicksburg campaign, Chickamauga, Chattanooga and through most of the Atlanta campaign. He was captured at the Battle of Jonesborough (modern day Jonesboro) in August 1864. After the war he returned to Apalachicola to his wife Mary Louisa and their eight children.
