The photographer was a park ranger at the park. The image was taken in front of the ranger station at the Little Talbot Island State Park for use in an exhibit.
The mission, which tranlates to St. Johns of the Port, was located at the mouth of the St. Johns River (the name derives form the mission) on Fort George Island. It was a Franciscan mission to convert Timucuan peoples in the late 1500s through 1702. The sherd was excavated by archaeologist William Jones in 1972.
