General Note
Accompanying note: "Queen Udell has patience 'just like Job,' according to her husband. The 57 year old woman learned to make yo-yo quilts from her mother and grandmother. These yo-yos are sewn up with embroidery thread, flattened and sewn together by hand. Ms. Udell estimates there are approximately four thousand of the dime-sized yo-yos in this quilt, which took over a year to complete... 'People give me scraps and I just sews'um.' Although she has no quilting frame, Ms. Udell also makes patchwork quilts. This 'string quilt' uses long, narrow strips as the patchwork motif. She quilted the entire quilt in her lap, using any extra material she had for a backing. She has no idea how many quilts she has made... 'I just quilts'um as I go.' Queenie Udell makes her 'yo-yo' quilts in her spare time. She often works late into the evening gathering by hand the small circles of brightly patterned fabrics. After she has an assortment of yo-yo's she begins tacking them into small blocks which are later put together to form the size quilt she desires. Queenie learned to quilt as a young girl."
