General Note
The elevation on Mound Key, rising over 30 feet above sea level, consists of shells and other organic material discarded by indigenous Floridians for over 2,000 years before contact with Europeans and Africans. The island, located in Estero Bay, is believed to have been a Calusa Indian ceremonial center in the 16th century. The Koreshan Unity acquired Mound Key in the early 1900s and used it primarily for vegetable farming. Today the site is an Archaeological State Park maintained by the Florida Park Service.
