"Near the harbor entrance is Fort Clinch, so called in honor of a colonel of that name who distinguished himself in the Mexican war. It was occupied for defensive purposes in the rebellion, but has no garrison at this time. The guns are mostly dismounted and lie about promiscously." -D. Webster to the St. Albans messenger, December 1875.
