General Note
Forerunner to the University of Florida in Gainesville was the East Florida Seminary, which served the needs of formal higher education and functioned as a boys' military school for many years. It went out of existence when the University of Florida was established in Gainesville in 1905 (on July 5). The Seminary was located at what is now Northeast 1st street and 5th avenue. This old engraving originally appeared in "Eden of the South" by Carl W. Webber, published in 1883.
