General Note
This is the west side of Gainesville's Main street in the 1890's, opposite courthouse square. This is the street down which the trains ran each day, which brought passenger and greight service to the city. It was a period when Gainesville had just established reliable water service and installed fire hydrants; and it may be the motivation for the water system sprang in part from a fire which had destroyed downtown buildings north and west a few years earlier. Electric lights also were in use. Some of these buildings are very much like structures which stand today, although most of the stores on this side of the square were damaged or destroyed in a fire about 1940; much of the building of this are was rebuilt.
