General Note
Verdura plantation house was built in 1832 by Major Benjamin Chaires. Chaires died in 1838 at the age of 53 and left Verdura to his wife who died in 1846. The plantation passed to their children and fire destroyed it in 1885. Four vine-covered columns and a mound of bricks are all that remain along with the Chaires family cemetery which remains undisturbed in a protected area.
Helen Ormand was sister of Russell Ormand and was married to Joseph Chaires. Helen died August 27, 1841. Russell died August 29, 1841.
