Accompanying note: "Florida's territorial legislature adopted parts of English law in 1829. An act of Florida's new state legislature passed on December 27, 1845, authorized Judge Leslie Thompson (later a Florida Supreme Court Justice, 1851-1853) to compile these British laws, for use by the legal community, as an appendix to his Digest of the Statute Law of the State of Florida (1847). Although completed and approved along with the Digest, Thompson's 'appendix' was never published. In addition to simply citing the British statutes, Judge Thompson annotated them quite extensively. At 751 pages, the legislative commission found the manuscript to be 'too voluminous' to be included with the Digest. In 1853, the Supreme Court Library was given the manuscript and has preserved it here ever since. For those interested, the simple enumeration of the British statutes were published in the Florida State Bar Association Law Journal, volume 4 (1930-1931), pages 455-458."
