Carlisle Floyd (1926-) was a southern opera-composer, and a former FSU Music Professor. Born in Latta, SC, e is considered one of opera's foremost American composers and librettists. His opera Susannah waswritten while teaching at FSU where it premiered in 1955, is considered the major American contribution to the world of opera. It played in New York City in 1956, where it won the New York Music Critics Circle Award for Best New Opera. It was also chosen to represent American music and culture at the Brussels World's Fair in 1958. He taught at FSU from 1947 to 1976.
