General Note
In 1900's Alantic Coast Line Railroad Company expanded to become large system of railroads known as the Standard Railroad of the South. It carried the majority of Florida bound passengers and was known for its purple diesels. In 1967 merged with Seaboard Air Line to form Seaboard Coast Line Railroad.
In 1900 Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Company of Virginia consolidated with Norfolk and Carolina Railroad Company and others to form Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Company. Brunswick and Western Railroad Company assumed by Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in 1902.
Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Company was chartered originally in 1836 as Richmond and Petersburg Railroad Company. In 1898 consolidated with Petersburg Railroad Company to become Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Company of Virginia.
In 1969 Seaboard Coast Line purchased Piedmont and Northern, a former interurban line owned by Duke family interests, through alliances with various other railroads and became known as the "Family Lines Systems." (This title was simply a marketing device). In 1982 Seaboard Coast Line merged with other railroad systems to become Seaboard System Railroad; Seaboard Line Industries [holding company] which then merged with Chessie System, Incorporated in 1980 to become part of CSX Corporation.
