General Note
"The Billy Bowlegs Festival, celebrated annually at Fort Walton Beach, is one of the most colorful events held in northwest Florida. The festival recreates a page from the pirate era of Florida history. It is believed that Billy Bowlegs, part Indian sea raider, made his headquarters in that vicinity. Exciting highlights of the festival are the mock sea battle, the burning of the fort, the landing of the pirate Bowlegs and the treasure hidden in the white sands of the beach."
