Shown above is a copy of the column presented friendly Timucuan Indians by Frenchman Jean Ribault when he landed at the mouth of the St. Johns River at Jacksonville, Florida, May 1, 1562. This column was in honor of King Charles IX of France. Today, the copy stands on the banks of the St. Johns near Fort Caroline, the national monument.
