General Note
The few remaining graves at Saint Joseph's Cemetery bear mute testimony to the yellow fever epidemic that hit the port in 1841. Within a few weeks three-forths of the town had died. The remained fled and for three years the town was deserted. In 1844 a hurricane removed all the buildings in the town.
