Biographical Note
Amelia originally belonged to Jose M. Hernandez but was sold at the age of 9 to a Mr. Walker, a Louisiana farmer, who treated her poorly. At age 14 Captain Price became her master, and she received better treatment. At age 19 she married David, a house slave. They stayed on after the war to work on the plantation for pay. Amelia returned to St. Augustine after her mother died to help her father. She had a daughter, Sophronia.
