Saturn launch vehicles for Project Apollo. The Apollo spacecraft is launched from Earth by the Saturn vehicles. The smaller two-stage Saturn I is used for placing modules of the spacecraft into Earth orbit for extensive checkout and testing. The larger three-stage Saturn V, which can place more than 280,000 pounds into earth orbit, or send almost 100,000 pounds to the moon, will be used for the manned lunar landing mission.
