General Note
In September 2005, the city made an agreement with WRS Infrastructure & Environment for the Cascades Park soil remediation project. Discarded coal tar from a nearby city-operated gas plant had contaminated the soil. Over 70,000 tons of impacted soil was contracted to be excavated from the former manufactured gas plant and surrounding area while three inches of sediment from within the entire Cascades Creek channel was removed for transport to an EPA-approved landfill.
The Cascades was where the two Florida delegates, one traveling from St. Augustine and the other from Pensacola, met and camped. Thereafter, this site was determined to be the mid-point between Florida's first two cities, and was designated the state capital. Cascades Park was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.
Centennial Field, built in 1924 for Tallahassee's 100th anniversary, served as the capital city's chief sports and civic arena for decades.
Note S. Gadsden St. traveling from the left to the top right of the image.
Reconstruction of the park began in July 2010. The park will be continuous from Lafayette Street on the north to Monroe Street on the southwest and address existing flooding problems along the St. Augustine Branch.
