On March 14, 1967 at 4:00 the first eighteen children arrived from the Orlando Sunland Hospital via Air Force litter bus.
Division Director William H. Mapoles, hospital administrator William S. Samford, Medical Director Eugene Payne, M.D., state dignitaries and hospital personnel were on hand to welcome the children.
Biographical Note
Opened on July 1, 1952 as the W.T. Edwards Tuberculosis Hospital, it later became Sunland Hospital in 1968. The hospital closed in 1983, the State sold the site (building and 25 acres) in February 2006 and the building was demolished in September 2006.
