Description
Certificate of Lew B. Brown's commission as Major commanding the Pinellas County Guards, dated July 23, 1917. Brown was owner and editor of St. Petersburg's first daily newspaper, the Evening Independent. The Pinellas County Guards were formed in 1917 pursuant to Chapter 7292, Laws of Florida, which authorized the formation of county guard units to replace the Florida National Guard. The Florida National Guard had been mobilized to assist United States forces fighting in Europe during World War I. Brown was instrumental in establishing the Pinellas County Guards. This certificate is a copy retained in the files of the Florida Secretary of State.

An officer on the bark gives a firsthand account of the engagement in a letter obtained by Harper's Weekly. The second page includes an etching depicting the destruction of the salt factory. Published on pages 732-733 of the November 15, 1862 edition of Harper's Weekly Magazine.
