An Act to Regulate the Admission of Physicians and Surgeons to Practice in This Territory, 1824

Date
1824-12-30
Description
Legislative act stipulating requirements for practicing medicine or surgery in the Territory of Florida. Prospective doctors or surgeons were required to file their diploma and a certificate of moral character with the county clerk. A physician could still practice medicine without a diploma if he could certify his having studied surgery or physiology for two years at a college or under the tutelage of a "reputable physician." Physicians applying for licensure by this route had to be approved by two county judges.

Petition to Allow John W. Robarts of Hillsborough County to Practice Medicine, 1854

Petition to Allow John W. Robarts of Hillsborough County to Practice Medicine, 1854

Date
1854
Description
Petition signed by 166 citizens of Hillsborough County asking the legislative council to grant Dr. John W. Robarts a special license to practice medicine. According to these citizens, he did not possess a diploma from a medical college, which disqualified him, although at the time state law did provide other ways for a physician to qualify for licensure. Why Robarts was unable to obtain a license by one of these other methods is unclear.
