Florida Governor Reubin Askew (left) and his running mate Lieutenant Governor candidate former state senator Jim Williams of Ocala (right) have a brief word with newly appointed Secretary of State Dorothy Glisson (right, foreground) after Askew and Williams qualified to run in the coming election.
Biographical Note
Under the Constitution of 1865 and 1868, Florida had an elected Lieutenant Governor who served as presiding officer of the Senate. This place was abolished with the adoption of the Constitution of 1885. The office was reestablished on January 7, 1969, but not as a Senate presiding officer.
The first woman to serve as member of the Cabinet was Mrs. Dorothy W. Glisson, who was appointed Secretary of State by Governor Reubin O'D Askew on July 8, 1974. Mrs Glisson, a careerist in the Department of State, completed the term, to January 7, 1975, of Secretary of State Richard (Dick) Stone, who had resigned to run for the U. S. Senate. She was not a candidate for election.
