He sailed with Narvaez, as treasurer, on the ill-fated expedition that left Spain in 1528. It arrived in Tampa on April 4. They marched inland to Tallahassee, arriving June 24th. When the ships did not arrive to pick them up, they built 5 crude boats, all of which were lost, along with all but 80 of the 242 men, in a storm on the Texas coast. Cabeza de Vaca and 3 others arrived at Mexico City in June 1536.
