Note the hallway contains autographed photographs of some of its patrons. The Slipper has served multiple presidents, every governor since it opened, movie stars, famous journalists, countless legislators and more than countless lobbyists. The ballroom was used for large celebrations and meetings of Tiger Bay and Economic Club of Florida.
After 71 years in business, the Silver Slipper closed its doors on Sunday May 3, 2009. Like some other Tallahassee restaurants, the Slipper suffered financially after 2005, when lawmakers made it illegal for lobbyists to buy them anything. The Slipper could not survive the added weight of the U.S. economic recession in 2009.
The Silver Slipper was built in 1938 by Pete Mouchas at its original location on South Monroe Street at Palmetto. After a fire it reopened in the Northwood Mall. This image shows its third location on Silver Slipper Lane. Jimmy "Papa" Kalfas had been a manager in 1942, became a partner in 1944 and owner in 1947.
